Howdale Bloodstock's Broodmares
The HBL broodmare band comprises four mares, two of whom (Penlanfeigan and Bromeigan) are free of Northern Dancer blood and offer outcross options with sires of his line. The other two, C’Est La Vie and Sharp Dresser by Bering and Diesis respectively offer mating opportunities with the more fashionable and proven stallions of this time.
Penlanfeigan (GB)(Abutammam-Royal Banner(Royal Palace))
A grand-daughter of the 1967 Derby winner ‘Royal Palace’, our venerable lady known as ‘Morticia’ was acquired in 1996 as a three year old and was covered by Mtoto, producing Bromeigan, a dark bay filly foal, now also part of the HBL broodmare band.
Morticia’s pedigree is distinctly old fashioned and is ‘Northern Dancer free’. All her TB offspring have been good enough to train and have good temperaments. She has produced several non-TB foals for Brackenspa but tends to stamp the offspring in her own style complete with the ‘Abutammam Bump’ on her nose which gives a distinct head shape.

Abutammam
After Bromeigan, she produced Night Mail (GB) a colt by Shaamit, the 1996 Derby winner. He showed some promise but with a racing fall injury, his race fitness was subsequently problematic and he never reached his full potential. He finally retired to retrain as a ‘hack’ and equine food critic.

Night Mail
In recent years Morticia has returned to TB breeding and is expecting a foal by Derby winner ‘Sir Percy’. This year she will visit Sakhee, winner of five races including the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and placed in three including the Derby and the Dubai World Cup. These crosses aim to give an injection of speed to the offspring’s pedigree to compliment the abundant stamina in the Dam line.
Bromeigan (GB) (Mtoto-Penlanfeigan(Abutammam))
Penlanfeigan’s daughter by Mtoto, known as ‘Meigan’ had an undistinguished racing career and effectively went into store before being leased to Brackenspa to be covered by Resident Gypsy. She produced a coloured colt foal, ‘Immortal Legend’ who subsequently has stood as a stallion in France. She then produced a filly foal, CoCo. After the non-TB coverings indicated she allowed the stallion to stamp her stock and given combined Mtoto’s reputation as an influential broodmare sire, HBL chose to send her to her first TB stallion, Erhaab (USA), the 1994 Derby winner. In 2007 she produced an impressive dark-bay colt very much in the stamp of his Sire. Now named Admiral Rodney (GB), he was prepared for racing in 2009 and in February will return to training as a three-year old with Mrs Pam Sly.

This year Bromeigan is due to foal to With Approval (CAN) of the Grey Sovereign line which works well with her particular bloodlines. After foaling she will visit Byron (GB), a son of Green Desert (USA).

Above is a picture of 'Luna', our new filly foal who arrived at 5.25am April 8th. Luna is a daughter of With Approval (CAN) out of Bromeigan(GB) by Mtoto (GB). With Approval (foaled 1986 in Ontario) won the Canadian Triple Crown in 1989. He finished second in the 1990 Breeders' Cup Turf and the Arlington Million. In winning the Bowling Green Handicap on June 17, 1990 at Belmont Park, With Approval set a new World Record of 2:10.20 for 1 3/8 miles on turf. The record remains unmatched. With Approval was retired from racing after the 1990 season and currently stands at stud at Landwades Stud in Moulton, Suffolk. He is the damsire of Miesque's Approval, winner of the 2006 Breeders' Cup Mile. As a stallion, he sired Talkin Man, the 1994 Canadian Champion 2-Year-Old Colt and 1995 Wood Memorial Stakes winner who in turn sired Better Talk Now, the 2004 winner of the Breeders' Cup Turf. In 1993, With Approval was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame. Mtoto foaled in 1983. He recovered so well from the foot problems which dogged his early career that when he went to stud, he did so as the winner of the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, and double winner of both the Eclipse Stakes and Prince of Wales's Stakes. He very nearly added the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe to this illustrious list too. All this from a horse who, by the end of his three-year-old campaign, had won only once, and that was a small maiden race at Haydock Park. His first important success came as a four-year-old in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown Park. He really blossomed in his final year, 1988, showing he was as good over one and a half miles as he was over ten furlongs and ending his racing life with a neck second to Tony Bin in the Arc. He stood at Aston Upthorpe Stud where he sired the Derby winner Shaamit, the Ascot Gold Cup winner Celeric and many other horses including Presenting, Arbatax and Maylane. Mtoto is Grandsire to the 2008 Cheltenham winner Denman. Bromeigan (GB) is the daughter of out matriarch mare, Penlanfeigan (GB) an un-raced grand-daughter of Royal Palace, the 1967 Derby winner. Bromeigan ran four times as a three year old before retiring to the paddocks. Her three-year old colt, Admiral Rodney (GB) by Erhaab (USA) (winner of the 1994 Derby) is currently in training with Mrs. P.M. Sly.
‘Vie’, as she is known, is a daughter of Bering (GB) and a Great-Grandaughter of Allez France the famous French racemare. Although bred for the flat she perhaps showed most ability over hurdles and narrowly failed to take a race at Ludlow in a close fought finish. On acquisition out of training by HBL in 2008, she too visited Erhaab (USA), subsequently producing a colt foal dubbed ‘Hector’. Unfortunately she did not take when covered by With Approval (CAN) in 2009. This year she is to visit Haafhd (GB), winner of the 2,000 Guineas, Champion Stakes and three other races, again to inject speed into to a proven stamina pedigree.
C'est La Vie & Hector

Hector
Sharp Dresser (USA) (Diesis-A La Mode (Known Fact))
Bred in the USA by Juddmonte and brought to Great Britain, she is HBL’s most track proven mare with wins on the flat and over hurdles. She was acquired out of training by private agreement from her owners in 2009 with the intent of sending her to stud. As a Diesis mare, she offered a ‘nick’ to some very notable offspring from the Danehill Sire line including Dylan Thomas, a multiple Group winner. She is now in foal to Tiger Hill (IRE), a son of Danehill and in 2010 will visit Singspiel (IRE) a Dubai World Cup, Japan Cup and Canadian International winner.
Sharp Dresser gave birth to a bay filly foal on Sunday 14th March 2010.
